The Intermittent Hypoxia-Hyperoxia Training (IHHT) is an innovative method for training cellular metabolism – comparable to altitude training for athletes, but without the need to travel to higher elevations.

The principle of IHHT training (Interval Hypoxia-Hyperoxia Training) is based on insights from altitude medicine and the physiological adaptations the human body undergoes when spending time at high altitudes.
Historically, it has been observed that people who live or regularly train at high altitudes enjoy various health benefits. These benefits include improved oxygen uptake, an increased number of red blood cells, and overall enhanced cardiovascular fitness. The idea of IHHT training was born from the desire to harness these positive effects of altitude adaptation without actually having to travel to the mountains. The phrase "mountain air heals" reflects these observations and emphasizes the health benefits associated with staying at high altitudes.
IHHT stands for Interval Hypoxia-Hyperoxia Training, a method in which the body is alternately exposed to phases of low oxygen levels (hypoxia) and high oxygen levels (hyperoxia). During the hypoxia phase, the oxygen content in the breathing air is reduced, similar to the conditions at high altitudes. This forces the body to adapt and enhances the efficiency of oxygen utilization. In the subsequent hyperoxia phase, the body is supplied with increased oxygen, which accelerates regeneration and breaks down metabolic products. This training simulates the positive effects of living or training at high altitudes, leading to improved cardiovascular functions, enhanced performance, and overall well-being.
IHHT can uniquely activate and regenerate mitochondria, the powerhouses of the cells. These organelles are responsible for producing ATP (adenosine triphosphate), which provides energy for all metabolic processes. By alternately exposing the body to phases of low oxygen and high oxygen levels, the efficiency and performance of mitochondria can be improved.
The human body consists of about 80 trillion cells, each with its own "powerhouses," the mitochondria. These are crucial for energy production in the body. However, their ability to produce energy is impaired by aging and modern lifestyle factors. Factors such as oxidative and nitrosative stress, as well as inadequate supply of essential vital nutrients, often lead to energy deficiency in the mitochondria, resulting in performance losses and chronic diseases.
A body cell contains between 1,500 and 4,000 mitochondria. Damaged mitochondria multiply faster, increasing the burden of oxidative stress in the body. IHHT helps regenerate damaged mitochondria, improve cellular metabolism, and promote overall health. IHHT can also lead to enhanced performance, improved sleep quality, stress reduction, and supportive effects in weight loss and various diseases.
With us, you receive a special mask that you take into a relaxing room where you can comfortably lie down or sit. You don't need to bring anything, and no training is required – you won't sweat, it's completely relaxing. During the session, you will alternately receive oxygen-poor and oxygen-rich air through the mask.
The normal oxygen saturation in the air is about 21%. On Mount Everest, the saturation drops to about 7-9%. Our device can adjust all settings in between to create the optimal conditions for you. The intervals, in which the oxygen level changes, each last 4-5 minutes.
A standard session lasts about 40 minutes, but it can be adjusted to individual needs. Many patients find the treatment so relaxing that they fall asleep during the session.

IHHT can stimulate the formation of new blood vessels and improve the flexibility of blood vessel walls, contributing to better blood circulation and oxygen supply. This may help improve cardiovascular function and regulate blood pressure.
By enhancing cellular function and strengthening the immune system, IHHT can boost the body's ability to combat inflammation and infections.
IHHT can improve glucose tolerance and stimulate metabolism, which contributes to the optimization of sugar and fat metabolism and can be helpful in the prevention of metabolic disorders.
IHHT can lead to improved mitochondrial function and stimulate cell regeneration, which can be beneficial in the prevention and management of chronic diseases.
Adapting to varying oxygen levels can lead to better stress resistance and alleviate symptoms of burnout and chronic fatigue by improving the balance in the autonomic nervous system.
Improved oxygen supply to the brain can enhance cognitive function and mental clarity, potentially having a positive impact on learning ability, memory, and concentration.

The optimal frequency of IHHT sessions varies depending on individual goals and health conditions. However, it is generally recommended to have 2-3 sessions per week over several weeks.
Ten IHHT sessions of approximately 40 minutes each provide comparable physiological effects to a four-week stay in the Alps and improve the body's performance for up to three months. To maintain the achieved effects, the IHHT sessions should subsequently be refreshed weekly.
IHHT is generally very well tolerated and is considered a safe therapy. In rare cases, mild headaches or dizziness may occur, but these usually subside quickly. 1-2 days after the therapy, slight fatigue may set in, which is often a sign that the therapy is working.
As with any therapeutic measure, there are certain contraindications for IHHT. At Circle Health, we provide individual consultation and assessment before starting the therapy to ensure that IHHT is suitable for you.
